Mystique is a "patterning" sculpture. Each large patterning wheel is built in two layers using contrasting wood colors. These create double patterns when they are rotated in opposite directions. The dark outer pieces form a rim or frame that constantly forms and collapses. The lighter stained inner spokes create the illusion of shrinking and growing forms as the direction of their rotation is changed.

This is a quiet but not silent mechanism. There is a subdued click as the mechanism levers engage and release small brass pins when the patterning motion changes direction.

  About the Animation

Animated gif-formatted drawings work well when using Netscape Navigator 3, Microsoft Explorer 3 or more recent versions of these browsers. The gif animation will repeat itself and play more rapidly when the page has finished loading. It takes 1-2 minutes for all the frames of the animation to load. This type of animation is very compact and works well over the Internet but it has it's limitations. The speed that the animation plays back at depends on the viewing application that you are using and the speed of your computer. In order to keep load times short I have only used enough frames to give a brief idea of the motion. This should only be considered a brief sketch of the motion.
