The idea for Tango came from a Tumult. Previously I designed a sculpture named Tumult. It had a nice random motion but was a bear to wind, it took three hands to do it easily. Tango evolved as I worked to improve Tumult.

Tango uses overlapping crescents mounted on a moving base as in Tumult but the motion and operation of the sculpture are much improved. The two dark stained crescents turn in a clockwise direction at a nearly constant rate. The light stained wheel they are mounted on is powered by the lower "arm" mechanism and rotates several revolutions clockwise and then several counter-clockwise. The interaction of the constantly rotating crescents with the counter-rotating carrying wheel creates many fascinating, random patterns of motion. I see many of them as dance moves when viewed from above, hence the name.

  About the Animation

Animated gif-formatted drawings work well when using Netscape Navigator 3, Microsoft Explorer 3 or more recent versions of these browsers. The gif animation will repeat itself and play more rapidly when the page has finished loading. It takes 1-2 minutes for all the frames of the animation to load. This type of animation is very compact and works well over the Internet but it has it's limitations. The speed that the animation plays back at depends on the viewing application that you are using and the speed of your computer. In order to keep load times short I have only used enough frames to give a brief idea of the motion. This should only be considered a brief sketch of the motion.
