No Template available for your sculpture?
Templates are needed for mounting many (but not all) of David’s Kinetic sculptures. We have uploaded many to the directions page here. There are no standard templates for the earliest designs. David hadn’t yet started to standardize things in his work. The template was created for individual sculpture and there wasn’t a universal template for all of the same design. He recommends you try the following:
Check out an image of your sculpture by looking at the original instructions. If you don’t have those we have uploaded copies of most at this location -
You can download them for free.
Or you can go to the portfolio area of our website and search for the sculpture there by title. https://www.woodthatworks.com/wood-that-works-2010-2019.
If you don’t know the title of your piece you can scroll through the images there looking for a match.
Once you have the image of your sculpture, mount yours to the wall using only the upper most screw hole. Use the image as a guide and try to visually match the mounting angle.
Make sure the one screw is fairly tight and secure.
If a very early design it will be weight powered and you will need to suspend the weight(s).
Wind the sculpture - only about 2 turns.
Try to start the sculpture and see if it works and keeps working. (Follow the direction on what to push in which direction). The angle of the sculpture is important in many of David’s sculptures because the pawls use gravity to fall into place at the correct time. If the angle is off, they will drop at the wrong time.
If your sculpture doesn’t run, or doesn’t keep running* do the following:
Pivot the sculpture SLIGHTLY (About one half inch) in one direction and try running it.
Observe. Do the levers between the wheels engage and does one wheel transfer power to the second?
If not, move the sculpture a little further. Try again.
Repeat this in both directions. If at some point the sculpture starts operating you will have discovered the correct angle.
Mark the remaining holes and insert the anchors there. Screw the sculpture to the wall using all the screw holes.
Screws and anchors: We use 1 1/2” # 8 round head - phillips head brass screws and a #6-8 3/4” plastic anchor when installing into sheet rock. These are common and available at regular hardware stores.
