About Storm
Storm is a large complex sculpture where I explore patterns that are created by six independent rotating wheels. Initially the motion seems chaotic but as I watch it I begin to notice patterns emerging as the wheels fall in and out of sync. The patterns are constantly forming and dissolving. This churning action reminded me of storm clouds.
This sculpture is driven by two spring drives each powering three of the wheels. The two sets of wheels are interwoven. Each mechanism makes a soft clicking sound once per revolution and a somewhat louder click when it actually drives the sculpture. If you listen carefully you can hear the sounds in the video.
I enjoyed this sculpture so much that I made a copy for the studio and one for our house where we have enjoyed them for a couple of years. Now I need the walls for new ideas so the “Storms” must find new homes.
